Why Fifth Grade Is Challenging

Xiang Meng 10/9/15
Assignment: Narrative
Fifth Grade is Challenging
Imagine that you had a truckload of hard homework from all your teachers. Ugh! What a pain in the neck! If you assume that, you are not alone. That is because fifth grade is challenging. What makes me think of that? Well, more homework is involved, the explanations are more complex, and the quizzes/tests and assignments are extremely difficult. Therefore, getting through fifth grade is a number one challenge.
What is the most feared object that teachers hand out? If you guessed homework, you are absolutely correct. To begin with, homework always fills up your free time, or the couch that you play Plants VS Zombies on. Furthermore, homework stresses fifth grade students out. You do not even want to know what the results or the reactions are. Last, but not least, you have a ton of homework weighing up to 300 pounds. Soon enough, while you are in the middle of writing an essay, I am sure that you will find yourself drooling on your notebook the next morning. Spoiler alert! Spoiler alert! Homework might sound bad enough, but, that is not even the worst! Prepare yourself to enter the totally confusing explanations room!
“So, to solve X, you must multiply, yammer, yammer, yammer.” Sophisticated explanations pop out of the fifth grade math teacher’s mouth. Groan. I think I will fall asleep. Understanding the human body in science might be weird and as rough as a rock! Your teacher might be like blah, blah, blah, human cells, blah, bones, blah, blah while your classmates are soundly asleep and snoring. What’s more, it is like a gigantic boulder on your shoulder to understand the origins. You’d be crushed and overwhelmed by the time your teacher finishes. Lastly, if your teacher says, “Class, take out your note book and solve pi,” you are out of luck. When it comes to figuring pi, sure you could ask your teacher or look on the back of the textbook for the definition, but, it will cost you hours to finally solve pi. Moving on next, the “Evil” Tests from the Teachers!
That’s not the end though, because the last reason is that there are difficult tests/quizzes and assignments. Fifth graders will possibly get low grades often. Also, the expectations are higher. There might be a teacher that assigns you to complete 6-7 achieve articles a week! In addition, the hard tests lead to frustration, and sometimes stirring up a fit. Before you know it, there are flames in your eyes, smoke billowing out of your ear, and a tornado on your head. You might even be ripping your hair off until you are bald. So, be aware of those pesky tests/quizzes and assignments!
To sum it up, fifth grade is challenging because there is an abundance of homework. Moreover, the tests/quizzes and assignments are burdensome. As a final point, the descriptions or definitions are complicate. The last year of elementary school is surely one difficult year.

Why You Should Have School Uniforms

School Uniforms, Yes

Imagine if everybody walked off the yellow bus wearing blue Defino Dolphin shirts! Wouldn't that be fabulous!? Wearing a school uniform provides many superb benefits. One, it can be less stress in the mornings when choosing your cloth. Also, wearing a school uniform might decrease stereotype or judging. Lastly, if an intruder invades the school, he or she will stand out.
To begin with, school uniforms drenches all the stress out of you. So then you do not have to worry about what to wear. In the article,"School Uniforms The Way To Go," it says, "Uniforms help you save time in the morning." In addition, it buys you some more time to eat breakfast or brush your teeth instead of wondering what you should wear most of the school days. Furthermore, school uniforms can save your parents money and time. For example, when my mom and I were back to school shopping, we searched for my pants from JCPenney to Macy's for a whole day. Now, thanks to school uniforms, all your parents need to do is to just purchase for one.
The next essential reason why uniforms are for students is that nobody will judge you or make fun of you. According to the text, it states, "Nobody will judge you by what you wear." Since everybody is wearing the same outfit, bullying will be reduced. So everyone will feel good and equal when wearing a uniform. Judgment will also be eliminated.
Yet, another reason why uniforms are beneficial is that strangers would be highlighted. In field trips, when you get lost, other teachers can identify what your school is. Moreover, intruders can be seen clearly on security cameras for better safety. In case of an emergency, like fire drills, kids can simply know which group they're part of.

After all, school uniforms will put an end to stereotype. Strangers and intruders emerge from the crowds of students with uniforms and you will feel distressed about morning hassle.

About Chief Oratam

Chief Oratam

Chief Oratam was sachem of the Hackensack indians during the time when the Dutch settlers first arrived at the northeast part of New Jersey. Chief Oratam was born in the year 1577 in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was a famous sachem of a large clan of Lenapes and a solemn negotiator between Native Americans and the European settlers. Oratam lived an unusual long 90 years. He was buried in Wykoff, New Jersey.

Chief Oratam was a sage negotiator who helped form many treaties between his people and the newcomers. He became in charge of the Hackensack, a large group of Native American in 1643. According to New Jersey Social Studies textbook on page 74, it mentions, " As Europeans began to settle in the Delaware homeland, conflicts soon arose between Dutch settlers and the surrounding Native American groups." As a respected sachem, Chief Oratam was chosen to settle arguments. Sitting around a rectangular wood table with friendly smiles on face, Oratam had peaceful conversations with newcomers. To end all hostilities, treaties were signed and truces were declared. By then, Oratam became quite influential. He acted as a peace symbol of conflicts.

Some legends about Oratam are sure interesting. Oratam was said to have another name, Oratini. He belonged to the turtle clan. During his rule, Oratam was very generous and fair. Based on the textbook on page 74,  to show appreciation to his interpreter Sara Kiersted, Chief Oratam gave her 2,000 acres of land. He was even trusted by the Dutch. Chief Oratam even traveled to the colonies territory to organized a conference which banished hostilities.

I chose Chief Oratam as my famous New Jerseyan because he was a trusted, respected, fair, peaceful negotiator among the Dutch settlers and Lenape Indians. Oratam used the non-violent way to solve conflicts the influenced people nowadays. Next time, when I argue with my brother about who gets to play the game "Bloons Tower Defense  4 " on the computer, Chief Oratam might reminds me to talk to him kindly that we each play 10 minutes in turns. Chief Oratam is remembered not only by two different peoples, also by his peaceful and powerful leadership. So, Chief Oratam is on the Hackensack municipal seal.

Arca's Explanation: LEAP DAY! February 29, 2016- Leap Year Explanation

Above: Today's Google logo for leap day. It has a bunny representing the 28th of February next to  one representing the 1st of March, and a bunny representing February 29 leaping between them! See it at google.com, or if you are reading this another day, click here.

2016 is a very special year! Why? It is a leap year, which is rare and only happens every 4 years! On a leap year, an extra day is added to February, which is February 29, commonly called "Leap Day". But why exactly does this happen?

The time it takes Earth to completely orbit the sun is different than the amount a year lasts on the average calendar used (AKA, the Gregorian Calendar). We say that there are 365 days in a year, but there are technically 365.24 days or a little over a day. That is why in order to keep our clocks and calendars in sync with Earth's ever-changing seasons, we add leap seconds, and also leap years.

Believe it or not, originally, the ancient Roman calendar had 355 days! But later, it was changed so that extra hours and a day would be added every 4 years. But Caesar changed it agin. 500 years later it was tweaked to the way we have it today.

Above: One of the previous Google logos celebrating leap day.

But the system will not stay the same forever. In 10,000 years, we will have to rethink it. That is a lot of complicated math right there that you can do for yourself!

Above: Sir David Brailsford, who is a famous Britain cyclist, was born on a leap year.

The odds of having a leap year are small (exactly one in 1,461), but many famous people are born then! Do you know anyone who's birthday is today?

Leap Year!

There has just been a leap year, so for people with birthdays on Febuary twenty-nine, you are in luck! Also, if you have the two thousand fifteen assignment pad, all the dates for March are wrong. Oh wait, it isn't wrong. Never mind! NOTE! MY brothers birthday is coming up in twelve days! Also, my mom's birthday is coming up in 4 days! Doctor Seuss day is coming in two days. Read Across America is coming up in two days. On that day, our school won't have any classes. We will only be reading and doing fun activities withe the other four teachers. Also, on 2:30, there is an event called Drop Down And Read. It is when you can go to any room besides the classroom to read with friends. In addition to the leap year, there is a new leap year google logo! It features a bunny hopping in between two bunnies, one with the mark, one, and the other with the mark, 28.

Ski Trip Day Two

Okay, day two. We went right to the resort. My brother had a two day rental for his skis and boots. Lets skip all of that. We went on blue belt a lot of times. This time, there is another freestyle path. That is where you go do tricks on specific pieces of equipment. I went on a ramp and went flying in the air!

Also, there was the bridge. It sounds easy to cross it, but with ice, not so much. It makes you go out of control. Then, I switched to the path with the big drop. The rest of the day was like that. Photos are unavailable.

Day One of Ski Trip

Okay, day one. It all started when we were in a car. Yep. In a car. Anyways, it took an hour and a half to get to the Pennyslvania Ski Resort. We were really excited. We went straight to the place where you get on the boots. Our dad bought the lift ticket. In the changing room, (you know what I mean.) we put on my boots. Mine were too small, a size 2. So I got a size 3. it was too small too, so I got a size 4. Fit me snugly.
10 Minutes later...

I am on my skis ready to go! I went to green belt first. its really long way up on the lift. A pretty fast way down.I went on blue belt next. Longer way up on the lift. It was a pretty good until there was this part when things sped up. Lastly, there was a big drop. Like this:

          B
            I
             G
                D
                   R
                     O
                        P
Pretty scary, huh?
I didn't expect it, so i plunged into doom and died. JUST KIDDING!
I wouldn't be typing here if I died. The resort opens all the way up to 9:00 so we left for an inn at 8:20 something. That is the end of section one so BBBBBBBUUUUUUHHHHHH-BBBBYYYYYYEEEEEEE!
